My yearly attempt at a Green Thumb

Hey guys and welcome back! With the weather finally starting to warm up here in Washington, I’ve started slowly turning my attention to our little gardens. This year is going to be a smaller garden year for us due to my ankle and some other things going on in life (because who doesn’t always have SOMETHING going on?), so I’ve been trying to make the most of the little space and energy I have right now.

One really cool project I found on YouTube that we are trying out this year is growing potatoes in five-gallon buckets. One great thing about them is that you can easily move them around the yard if you don’t get the required amount of sunlight in one area, or need to move them for any other reason. This easy project takes about ten minutes to complete and requires just a few supplies. All you need is a five-gallon bucket, ruler, marker, drill, soil, and 2-3 seed potatoes.

1.       Drill about 8-10 holes in the bottom to ensure proper drainage.

2.       Measure about 4” from the bottom of the bucket and fill with soil to that line.

3.       Next measure about 10” from the bottom.

4.       Place the seed potatoes in and spread them out.

5.       Fill the bucket to the 10” mark.

6.       Water thoroughly.

7.       When the leaves of the potato sproutlings reach the top of the bucket, gently fill with more soil to increase your crop.

8.       After about 60-70 days, the leaves will start to yellow and die. Feel free to harvest after that!

There are several awesome videos on YouTube; just google Five Gallon Bucket Potatoes to learn more.

Stay tuned for the other projects we have brewing, and remember: Life’s Just Ducky!
